A Short Note : I wrote this article even before I actually traveled to Jordan. This is one reason I perceive this as an offbeat article. People usually write a travelogue after having visited the country. And what motivated me to think and study Jordan? Pyramids of Egypt did. After having an overwhelming experience visiting pyramids in Egypt I somehow came to know about Petra in Jordan and an inquisitiveness started developing. From there I started reading about Jordan and a series of facts unfolded that highly intrigued me. Before that anytime I heard Jordan I was usually disinterested just like many other tourists are, as Jordan is not so highly popular. I was hence motivated to light a lamp in the darkness and change the general perception people have of this country with the new insight I have developed through my reading and through my past several travel experiences. Enjoy as you sail across.
Have you ever asked yourself why travel? Why go about wandering around the world leaving comfort of your home behind. If not then now is the moment to pause for a while and ask yourself why?
Each of us have a different urge behind the desire to travel and we travel to fulfill that urge. For some it's sheer desire to experience luxury, for some it is adventure, for some it is an urge to break out of their cocoon and see the world beyond. Many people can't remain complacent by just seeing and admiring places at a distance like in movies or in pictures. They want to experience it for themselves. Then there are ones who have deep inquisitiveness to learn, to know, to experience different places, different culture, different climatic conditions etc. They want to educate themselves by experience. Then there are people who wander simply because they can.
So who are the travelers who will get the most from traveling to Jordan. I believe Jordan is a country for people who are connoisseurs of traveling. People who have a taste and experience of traveling are ones who can love and admire Jordan the most. What do I mean by this? Well Jordan is usually perceived as an off beat or rather outlandish location. This is because in general people fail see beyond desert, stony mountains and ancient ruins. And so they do not see what Jordan has to offer. Only an experienced traveler can probe, understand and know that this Arab country has a lot for a visitor in terms of everything, whatever your urge is as a traveler. Mark that.
So following are a couple of things, I have figured out, that make Jordan a desirable tourist destination:
JORDAN is country in middle of Middle East. There is something different about Middle East that every one comes to love.
Arab countries remind you of the desert moons, Scheherazade, magic carpets.........remember sex and the city!!! In Jordan you can expect to taste the Arab culture and understand and experience their lifestyle. Savour exquisite delicacy of the Jordanian cuisine. Experience desert and breath taking sunsets. If you had been to other Arab countries like UAE, Egypt etc then u can surely see/feel or even consciously identify the nuances in the Arab culture and lifestyle of each country.
PETRA is one of the Primary attraction in Jordan and is among the 7 wonders of the world. The capital city of Nabateans, the symbol of Jordan. This place is not just for visiting, viewing and admiring. There are a couple of questions you can ask, learn and understand to educate yourself. What makes it one of the wonder of the world when there are only seven wonders? What's the history of Petra? How is it being maintained and at what cost? What is its future? Maybe compare it to other wonders of the world you have visited already. Expand your horizon. This is also the shooting location for the very old and famous movie Indiana Jones.
WADI RUM - The filming location for Mars in the movie The Martian. In the movie when Matt Damon was at Mars, while talking to his team at NASA he says - "there is unlimited horizon which I see everyday because I can!!!" So can we. We don't need to travel to Mars to see endless horizon. Wadi Rum gives the experience of the endless nothingness!!!
DEAD SEA - There is a great deal to know and learn about Dead Sea or the salt sea and a great deal to experience. Dead Sea has a history, a biblical history, therapeutic properties and science behind it. It's called Dead Sea because it prevents macroscopic organisms from dwelling into the sea while some bacteria and fungi do thrive though very less in number. So a great deal learn in terms of science and history and yes it also affects climatic conditions. Another arena to explore, understand and expand your learning.
The extreme weather - Jordan is extremely hot in summers and extremely cold in winters. It snows sometimes in winters and cold weather and be enjoyed by visiting at this time of year. Just like we cherish or fancy the winters in London.
Strong Currency - Jordanian Dinar [JoD] is a really strong currency. It is almost equal to British pounds in terms of its dollar value. So what makes it a strong currency. Even break down of one JD into dinar, piastre or quirsh and fils is pretty intricate. An intriguing question!!
There are many luxurious hotels in Jordan that provide breath taking views. People who seek luxury and comfort at the same time learn and grow would surely admire Jordan.
Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - Jordan is officially known as Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It has a constitutional monarchy still king owns wide executive and legislative powers. It is different experience to visit a country run by monarchs.
The marvelous roman ruins like Roman amphitheater, arch of Hadrian, temple of Hercules, odeon theater, nymphaeum etc tell a story of the existence of Roman Empire in Jordan. As a traveler probe and learn about their existence in Jordan and how they were conquered. Roman amphi theatre also indicate that such architecture was a roman specialty as one such amphi theatre is in Rome which itself is another wonder.
